Roof Ventilation in Woodbury: Why Most Attics Are Under-Ventilated

Why ventilation matters in a Minnesota attic

An attic without proper ventilation does four bad things:

  1. Traps summer heat. Attic temperatures hit 130-150°F in Minnesota summer. That heat radiates down into living spaces, drives up AC bills, and bakes shingles from underneath — shortening their life by 20-30%.

  • 1:300 ratio — 1 sq ft of vent for every 300 sq ft of attic, balanced (50% intake / 50% exhaust)

  • Continuous soffit vent strip spanning the entire eave length, both sides
  • Insulation baffles at the eave to keep soffit intake unblocked
  • Air-sealed ceiling below the attic floor to prevent moisture migration
  • Bathroom and kitchen exhaust ducted to the outside — never to the attic

This setup creates natural convection: cool air enters through soffits, heats up in the attic, exits through the ridge. No mechanical fans, no power consumption, no failure modes. Done right, it’s set-and-forget for the life of the roof.

What about power attic ventilators?

PAVs (power attic ventilators) and solar attic fans look like obvious solutions but have problems:

  • Can pull conditioned air from the home into the attic. If your ceiling has any air leakage, the PAV pulls cool air from your living space and exhausts it to the outside — defeating the purpose and increasing energy use.
  • Mechanical failure modes. Motors fail, fans seize, controls malfunction.
  • Often turned off by homeowners who don’t understand the system.
  • Don’t address intake side. If your soffit intake is blocked, the PAV is just stressing the seal of your home.

Most building science experts recommend balanced passive ventilation (ridge + soffit) over powered systems. Some specific situations (cathedral ceilings without ridge access, very low-slope roofs) may justify mechanical ventilation, but it’s the exception.

The good news: ventilation upgrades are dramatically cheaper during a roof replacement than as a standalone project:
